"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," wrote Charles Dickens in a Tale of Two Cities. We also live in that kind of time where there is dismal darkness and all the news seems bad. But the message of Christmas is that that the Good News always dispels the bad news like light dispels the darkness. The prophet Isaiah wrote, "The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them" (Isa. 9:2).

Just this week, the Rev. Billy Graham warned American churches, "Prepare for Persecution." This message begins a new series in Peter's first letter called, "Hope in Shaky Times." What ever your shaky times and circumstances are, "What does it mean to have a living hope?" When we face trouble and distress, what does it mean to have a hope that is fully grounded in Jesus Christ? Peter is uniquely qualified to speak of hope in a way that instills hope and confidence in Christ, no matter what we are going through.

From the experience of those who feared the Lord, we learn that we tend to fear who what we fear the most. Yet when we fear the Lord, we don't have to fear anything or anyone else but the Lord.

"Friendly Fire" - As Christianity is less and less tolerated in our culture and more and more criminalized, it's a sad fact that some of those who profess to be Christians take it out on other Christians. They mistakenly think that they are doing the work of God when they tear down other Christians in order to build themselves up. The "cure" for being judgmental and condemning is submitting to the Lordship of Christ.
