When we do the Lord's Work the Lord's way, we can expect obstacles and severe opposition from the world and from Satan. It goes with the territory. Nehemiah is our example of how those obstacles are overcome and how opposition is conquered.
How do we exercise "mustard seed" faith that moves mountains? What does it look like? Nehemiah is our example of how each one of us can experience what it means to move mountains.
When Nehemiah prayed and wept before the Lord for months on end, God began to reveal to Nehemiah how he would be specifically used as an essential part of the answer. From Nehemiah's prayer, we learn how we collaborate with God in what He is doing. Prayer is how we stay in step with God in our families, in our churches, and in our communities. Prayer is spending time in God's presence, waiting on Him, until we know what to do.
When you begin to see a severe need; when you see the devastation and rubble in someone's life or maybe a ministry need that concerns several troubled and "rubbled" people, how can you begin to discern that God wants you to be specifically involved? How do you know when God is calling you to a ministry or to serve in a particular way? With Nehemiah as our example, we will see three particular principles from God's Word that will give you insight and direction.
There's a lot of talk about walls these days: The building of the wall along our border with Mexico; The walls that divide people or prevent them from opportunity. Are walls a good thing or a bad thing? And what happens when walls continue to be breached and a toehold of the enemy becomes a stronghold and then a stranglehold?
The prophet Isaiah's prayer was, "Lord, show us the awesome things You do in Your Presence." When God comes down, He makes known His inescapable presence. The cry of Isaiah was answered when Christ came to earth as a man. It will be answered at Jesus's coming again. Isaiah's cry was answered on the Day of Pentecost. And it is also answered in each one of us who are filled with the Spirit of God. We should expect to see God do awesome things when we are aware of His presence.
While I was preaching this message, we were interrupted by the sound of a violent hail storm outside the church. God gave us a pertinent object lesson. I had talked about how at Pentecost there was the sound of violent rushing wind and the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. As I was talking about how Scripture is God-Breathed and men were carried by the Holy Spirit in writing Holy Scripture, we heard the noise of the wind and the hail storm.
This message begins the series on what it means to be a Spirit Led Church. How does the Holy Spirit lead us by the Word, in our Worship, Service, Evangelism, Fellowship, and in our Prayers? This is a base camp level orientation for the exciting Christian Walk.
The presidential candidates are promising to "Make America Great Again." But no politician ever made America great nor can he or she make it great again. Likewise, a government cannot make a nation great. America's greatness can be traced solely to the work of God through His Church. And when we discover how, each one of us will also discover what our individual roles need to be if America is to be great again.
